In this chapter, Byron's efforts to jolt Cece out of her short-term memory loss, which she has suffered after her second suicide attempt, seem to yield little effect, no matter how hard he tries, and at first he himself seems to plunge back into depression as a result - so much so that even Holly's touching attempt at consolation sex only acts as a temporary (if utterly delicious) cure.
Eventually, however, Byron gets struck by just the right idea of how to breach Cece's defenses - by proving to her that she is nowhere near as worthless as she thought, he finally gets the patient back on the right track.
